Welcome Home! Come Walk With Us!

Mission Committee

Our Mission outreach is accomplished both corporately by member groups and by individuals and their personal commitment to efforts to serve the Lord locally and globally.  Northside tithes (that is, gives 10%) its operating budget to mission projects each year.

The Mission Committee, which leads a significant amount of the mission work at Northside, is responsible to:
  • seek out the needs of our local, regional and world community
  • develop approaches and mobilize the resources of the church to help meet needs
  • help the congregation develop its concept of ministry
  • disburse funds designated for outreach
The Mission Committee meets the second Sunday of each month and encourages the congregation to contact committee members at any time to share possible mission outreach opportunities. You are also invited to attend our meetings and volunteer to be a part of the committee or to support any of its projects.

Mission Projects We Support:

Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry

We have an on-going food collection for Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry. Northside volunteers are responsible for the food pantry operation two days each month. We also recruit volunteers to provide a home cooked meal to the Presbyterian Campus Ministry students at Cooper House once each month during the fall and spring semesters.

Children's Dental Program

As has been the case for many years, Northside was the collection point in Blacksburg for new and used goods for the Montgomery County Christmas Store. Numerous church members contribute time accepting items at the church and delivering them to the Store.

Boy Scouts

Boy Scout Troup 56 and Cub Scout Pack 56 are sponsored by and chartered to Northside.  We provide a meeting place, leadership, and some financial support to the scouts.

Presbytery of the Peaks

In cooperation with the Christian Education (LOGOS) and Facilities and Finance committees, our third vegetable garden was a big success. Youth and adult members come together to plant, tend and harvest potatoes, and winter squash on the church grounds. The largest harvest of potatoes yet in 2007 was donated to the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry.

Northside supports four major offerings of the Presbyterian Church USA (One Great Hour of Sharing, Pentecost, Peacemaking and Joy Gift) as well as the Synod Thanksgiving offering. On the second Sunday of each month, members contribute spare change to the Presbytery’s hunger programs through the 2 cents-a-meal offering.  The Children’s offering taken during the children’s sermon was sent to the Children’s Home of the Highlands in Wytheville.

Seven youth and four adults prepared for nearly a year in 2006/2007 to raise funds and their awareness and understanding of global mission work in preparation for a mission trip to Sonora Mexico. In partnership with the Presbyterian Border Ministry, these members joined with their Mexican brothers and sisters in worship, work on service project s and to learn about each other’s church, culture and language.
